Spyderco ParaMilitary2 Folding Knife Review

Spyderco's ParaMilitary2 is the third version of a Spyderco design originally meant for military use. First scaled down for civilian needs as the ParaMilitary, the knife now returns with subtle but important improvements.

The ParaMilitary2 slims down the bulky styling of the older civilian survival knife but doesn't lose strength. In fact, this version features a longer blade and handle but weighs exactly the same as the ParaMilitary. The closed length of 4-13/16 inches still fits the pocket comfortably, and the 3.75 ounces of weight will hardly be noticed. A narrower handle style using the same efficient G-10 grip makes the knife more comfortable to use, and a thinner profile makes it easier to carry. Rounded grip edges and improved jimping also improve the knife's handling and make long-term uses more practical.

With the ParaMilitary 2, you get a slightly longer and narrower blade with a length of 3-7/16 inches and a blade thickness of 3.5 mm. The quality of the steel hasn't changed -- Spyderco uses CPM-S30V high carbon stainless steel for the corrosion-resistant blade. The round thumb hole in the blade gives smooth leverage for one-handed opening with an improved bushing pivot system that makes operation more consistent than the older model knife. Spyderco's trademark thumb hole actually works better than most thumb stud systems and doesn't interfere with the knife's cutting action. A compression lock snaps into place when the blade fully opens.

Choose any of four different carrying positions with the customizable stainless steel pocket clip.

Zero Tolerance Model 0121 Ranger Fixed Blade Knife Review

The Ranger 0121 Fixed Blade from Kershaw U.S.A.'s Zero Tolerance line won't win beauty contests, but you also don't find many smaller backup knives as tough as pry bars. Keeping it strong and simple, the ZT Ranger won't fail.

At only eight inches in overall length and 9.1 ounces in weight, the Ranger's unusual four-inch-long dagger blade of high carbon S30V stainless steel still looks like a heavy-duty fighting knife. Both blade and full tang are wider than most civilian knives of this type, and that extra steel contributes to the knife's rugged strength. Built for piercing as well as slashing, the compound curve of the plain cutting edge bites into rope or harness straps instead of sliding across. The cord-cutting notch is a little too close to the finger choil for convenient use. If you keep the blade sharp, you'll probably cut through any cord small enough to fit the notch before you even find it.

The dark tungsten DLC coating of the
Ranger's non-reflective blade resists abrasion and adds to the steel's already good corrosion resistance. Ample handle slabs of textured OD green G-10 provide extra hand traction and excellent twisting leverage. The G-10 is easy to grip in all types of weather and through extreme temperature changes as well as resisting damage from most chemicals. For extra safety, string a wrist lanyard through the hole in the knife's heel.

Built with military rigging in mind, the Ranger's Zytel sheath meets MOLLE standards and adapts to many types of gear as well. Nothing fancy is required -- the sheath also fits nearly any ordinary belt, military or civilian.

Spyderco Police 3 Folding Knife Review

It has been twenty years since the Spyderco Police Model was introduced and it remains a cutlery icon. It was designed to have an as large as possible blade built into a thin, equally sized handle. Because of this, Save and Serve professionals continue buying the Police Model as an essential tool for their trade. Since its introduction, new handle materials like G-10 have become available in the cutlery industry., and requests for a G-10 handled Spyderco Police Model poured in. We accommodated, and re-engineered with a finger choil, a full flat ground blade, and released the Police3.

G-10 as a handle material has a lot of benefits. It is unbelievably tough, it doesn’t retain heat or cold, it’s resistant to chemicals, discoloration and peeling. The handle has clip drills on both faces, at the top and bottom. So you can carry the Spyderco Police 3 tip-up or tip-down, and it has options for both left-handed and right-handed persons. The folder is very thin, and that makes this knife very good for slicing.

The Police3 folder looks and feels far larger than what you see in the pictures posted on the web.

My only complaint about this knife is the chosen locking mechanism. I think the backlock is a poor choice for such a big pocket knife. It is difficult to press the backlock to close the knife. I hope it will get easier after a while, maybe it will break in a bit. Still, a liner lock, or a framelock would are better suited for pocket knives of this size. I’ve heard complaints about the new locking mechanism that was introduced on the Paramilitary 2 too. While I love Spyderco for being such an innovative company and always experimenting with new steels and designs, I think they should stick with the more traditional locking mechanisms that have proved their worth time and time again.

The Police 3 is a great slicer, and a very good tactical knife for self defense. The big Spydie-hole makes it really easy to open the blade fast, even when wearing gloves. And the big size of both the handle and blade will give you an amazing reach. For these purposes I highly recommend the Spyderco Police3 Folding Knife.

Cold Steel Rajah III Folding Kukri Knife Review

Cold Steel Rajah III Folding Kukri Knife 3-1/2" Plain Blade, Grivory Handles

The favorite field and military knife of Nepal's Gurkha regiments inspired the Rajah III from Cold Steel. Recreating the broad and heavy blade of a kukri knife in a folding clip knife style is right in line with Cold Steel's philosophy.

The Rajah III is the smallest of the gurkha knives Cold Steel produces. All knives in the Rajah series were designed by Andrew Demko and are built to have both the feel and the function of the traditional kukri. Even though the cutting edge is just 3.5 inches long and the knife weighs only 4.4 ounces, the forward-weighted blade and the machete-style handle let the Rajah III swing and chop as well as thrust. You'll find that the S-curve of the knife's plain edge grabs and slices rope and harness straps quickly by drawing the edge of the knife deeper into the cut.

Cold Steel uses AUS8 high carbon stainless steel in the knife blade along with solid steel liners and a handle of Grivory. This synthetic material often substitutes for metal parts in the automotive industry and resists heat and chemical action. Other technical improvements include one-handed opening via a flat thumb plate at the base of the blade. The knife opens either right or left-handed. Catching the thumb plate on the lip of your pocket also swings the blade open. Cold Steel improved the locking mechanism of this lockback knife, so the catch no longer depends on perfectly matching bearing surfaces. The new Tri-Ad lock seats against a stronger steel locking pin instead.

The 8-3/8-inch-long Rajah III folds into a pocket-sized, 4-7/8-inch handle with mountings for the stainless steel pocket clip on either side. Mount the clip for either right-hand or left-hand carry.

KA-BAR Bull Dozier Fixed Blade Knife Review

Designed by Bob Dozier and produced in collaboration with Ka-Bar, the Ka-Bar Bull Dozier knife shows the forty years of knife-making experience Mr. Dozier has acquired. The Bull Dozier could work as a combat knife, hunting knife, or survival knife -- strong enough for any rough task and refined enough for details.

This full tang, clip point knife keeps much of the weight forward for a good balance between cutting edge and handle grip. The dark, powder-coated, 6-1/2-inch-long blade is slightly hollow-ground for easy sharpening, but the edge has a strong 20-degree bevel that holds up to more than light cutting. Owners might choose to lessen that over time, but the heavier edge can be an advantage. The Bull Dozier's handle slabs of Zytel with textured Kraton inserts fasten to the tang with precision screws, with the advantages of a high tech folder's grip but without the underlying weaknesses. Easy to hang onto in any weather, the Bull Dozier's grip includes a shaped Zytel bolster and pronounced finger choil.

Twelve-and-a-half inches overall, the 13.6-ounce
Dozier is heavy, but this is weight put to good use. The knife is AUS 8 high carbon stainless steel hardened to between Rockwell 57 and 59. It will hold a razor edge and hold up to hard use. The Bull Dozier is manufactured in Taiwan but fully backed by Ka-Bar's high standards and excellent warranty. The knife comes with a Zytel sheath engineered to mount on either hip via a reversible belt fixture. This sheath fits tight, holding the knife in place with friction, and requires some breaking-in before it works properly.

Benchmade Mini Barrage Folding Knife Review

Benchmade Mini-Barrage AXIS-Assisted 2.91" Satin Combo Blade, Valox Handles

In May 2010, Blade Magazine listed Benchmade's 585 Mini-Barrage among the most popular knife choices for women. This Warren Osborne design is for women or men who want the functionality of the full-sized Barrage in a small package.

You don't lose much when you choose the Mini-Barrage. This knife's blade features the same 154CM high carbon stainless steel, hardened to Rockwell 58 to 61 for a long-lasting cutting edge. The blade's only about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the larger model with a length of 2.91 inches and a slightly scaled-down handle four inches long when closed. That's a better fit for smaller hands but still plenty of grip for other users.

The Mini-Barrage mounts to the lip of a pocket with a strong stainless steel pocket clip and can be reconfigured by owners to fit either right- or left-handed use. Just remove and reverse the clip mounting for left-handed carry. Dual thumb studs permanently set in the base of the blade allow both lefties and righties to open the blade without any changes. The Axis lock guarantees that the blade stays put, either closed or open, and once a push of the thumb starts the blade moving, the spring assist mechanism snaps the blade open with nearly automatic speed.

If you're used to knives with a high friction grip, the Valox handle may surprise you. This form-fitting material is the same high-impact plastic used in many modern gunstocks and stays in the hand more by shape than by tackiness. At 3.4 ounces, it's light enough to take along on runs, but it's enough practical blade for serious work.

CRKT M21-14DSFG Special Forces Big Dog Folding Knife Review

Knife maker Kit Carson designed CRKT's M21-14DSFG Desert Big Dog for Special Forces use in desert warfare. A blade coating of titanium nitride and handle scales of G-10 give the knife its desert brown hue. Beneath the sand-brown exterior, the knife is all metal with frame and liners of stainless steel and a blade of high carbon stainless 8Cr14MoV steel alloy. The G-10 scales add texture to the grip without adding much weight and also provide good insulation for the hands when the steel in the knife is too hot or too cold to handle.

The 3.875-inch spear-point blade includes two "Carson flippers" at the base. The flippers form a functional hilt when the blade opens and provide opening and closing leverage. Start the blade moving with the thumb studs, and finish the swing with the flipper. The Auto-Lawks mechanism automatically fixes the blade in a locked-open position -- the knife can't close until the Auto-Lawks is pulled back and the liner lock is pushed to the side. The unusual Veff Serration on the cutting edge is so good that it's patented. The hook-style teeth grip anything that passes over them. Tough straps and cords won't skip past it.

When open, this is a full-sized, 9-1/4-inch-long knife strong enough for prying as well as cutting. Folded, the knife is only five inches long and mounts to pockets or harnesses with four different positions of the stainless steel pocket clip. Mounting the knife tip-up in the pocket isn't recommended, but the other options provide useful choices for both right- and left-handed users.

Skeletonizing the handle frame reduces the weight of this folder to only 5.5 ounces but leaves the knife open to dust and grit. Give the Big Dog a good cleaning regularly to keep it working properly.

Cold Steel Recon Scout Fixed Blade Knife Review

Cold Steel Recon Scout 7-1/2" SK-5 High Carbon Black Fixed Blade

The Cold Steel Recon Scout performs great and shows that you don’t have to spend $300 to get this kind of performance from your survival knife. The blade is SK-5 (1080 equivalent). Cold Steel uses SK-5 instead of Carbon-V which is hard to get a hold of right now. The blade has a nice black epoxy powder coat finish and a nice long blade at 7.5 inches long. The overall length of this knife is 12.5 inches. One of the greatest things about the Recon Scout is that the blade is 5/16 inches thick, making it great for hammering and batoning work. This knife will hack through 4 inch tree limbs without a problem. The SK-5 High Carbon Steel holds an edge really well and sharpens nicely. The blade comes razor-sharp right out of the box.

The Recon Scout original model, the 39LRS, features a SK-5 high carbon blade that has proven to be tough and reliable over the years. Basically, the Recon is a small version of one of the most popular Bowie knives on the market: the Cold Steel Trail Master. The blade of the Recon Scout comes with a black Teflon finish to prevent rust. The handle is made of Kraton a polymer similar to rubber but tougher and with better resistance to hot temperatures. This material assures a good grip and reduces the shock from chopping.

The Kraton handle is awesome. I can’t express how great this handle is when it comes to actual use in the field. Awesome for shock absorption, awesome for cold weather use, awesome durability and provides a sturdy grip in all conditions. You could grease this handle up and still get a great grip. I love the Kraton handles. Fancy handles can’t hold a candle to this handle when the rubber meets the road.

The Secure-Ex sheath retains the Recon Scout knife well and is well constructed. It’s not the best sheath ever made but it’s well made and does a good job. The Cold Steel Recon Scout is close to the heavy side at 15 ounces but the balance of this knife makes that a non-factor. You will enjoy using this knife to get the job done, no matter what the job may be.

Down Under Knives The Outback Bowie Knife Review

Bowies large enough to suit Crocodile Dundee were common on the American frontier but are much harder to find now. Today, if you're shopping for a Dundee knife, you might have to settle for a cheap movie replica or something practical but smaller. Fortunately Down Under Knives, a knife company from Australia, makes the real thing. You'll find it hard to distinguish their Outback Bowie from the knife Mick brandished in the urban jungle of New York City.

The styling of this fixed blade of high carbon 440C stainless steel matches the details of the movie blade including the upswept point, false upper edge, and blood groove. Brass pommel and blade guard bracket a grip made from African ebony and stacked leather spacers -- a construction similar to Ka-Bar's classic Marine knife but better looking. Durability counts in any real knife, and the dual temper of the Outback gives the spine and tang of this hefty outdoorsman's knife flexibility and shock resistance along with a long-lasting and harder cutting edge. Down Under Knives warrants the knife against defects in workmanship and materials for five years, and in spite of its good looks, the Outback is built tough enough to withstand heavy use.

Sixteen inches long and 6 mm thick, the Outback Bowie provides 11 inches of cutting edge -- enough to impress friendly New Yorkers and many others. Twenty-eight ounces gives the knife chopping ability as well, so when you strap the Outback to your belt, you can safely leave the axe at home.

Down Under includes a genuine leather belt sheath with a crocodile-skin pattern. A sharpening rod also fits in the sheath, attached to a rawhide loop with ornaments of real bone.
