It has been twenty years since the Spyderco Police Model was introduced and it remains a cutlery icon. It was designed to have an as large as possible blade built into a thin, equally sized handle. Because of this, Save and Serve professionals continue buying the Police Model as an essential tool for their trade. Since its introduction, new handle materials like G-10 have become available in the cutlery industry., and requests for a G-10 handled Spyderco Police Model poured in. We accommodated, and re-engineered with a finger choil, a full flat ground blade, and released the Police3.
G-10 as a handle material has a lot of benefits. It is unbelievably tough, it doesn’t retain heat or cold, it’s resistant to chemicals, discoloration and peeling. The handle has clip drills on both faces, at the top and bottom. So you can carry the Spyderco Police 3 tip-up or tip-down, and it has options for both left-handed and right-handed persons. The folder is very thin, and that makes this knife very good for slicing.
The Police3 folder looks and feels far larger than what you see in the pictures posted on the web.
My only complaint about this knife is the chosen locking mechanism. I think the backlock is a poor choice for such a big pocket knife. It is difficult to press the backlock to close the knife. I hope it will get easier after a while, maybe it will break in a bit. Still, a liner lock, or a framelock would are better suited for pocket knives of this size. I’ve heard complaints about the new locking mechanism that was introduced on the Paramilitary 2 too. While I love Spyderco for being such an innovative company and always experimenting with new steels and designs, I think they should stick with the more traditional locking mechanisms that have proved their worth time and time again.
The Police 3 is a great slicer, and a very good tactical knife for self defense. The big Spydie-hole makes it really easy to open the blade fast, even when wearing gloves. And the big size of both the handle and blade will give you an amazing reach. For these purposes I highly recommend the Spyderco Police3 Folding Knife.
