Buck 119 Special Fixed Blade Knife Review

The 119 Special is Buck's best-selling hunting knife, and for good reason. It's a strong, no-frills knife that has everything you need in a hunting knife and nothing else.

I like the heavy duty feel to the Buck 119 Special. I also like the perfect balance immediately behind the polished aluminum guard. The included leather sheath is well made, with a drainage hole in the bottom, a generously sized belt loop, and a hard snap to keep your knife secured. Comfortable in the right or left hand. Very sleek look to it, and it really looks like a "hunting man's" blade.

The blade measures six inches and is made of 420HC stainless steel. It features a clip point blade. I am impressed with the Buck 119 Special's awesome construction and quality. The blade has stayed tight in the handle, and the blade has not bent, even though I sometimes have the bad habit of using it as an "all-around" knife and screwdriver. The handle is Phenolic, a synthetic molded resin that is quite strong and provides a non-slip grip. The butt and finger guard are made of polished aluminum and add an attractive look to this knife. The knife weighs in at 7.5 ounces, measures 10.5 inches overall and is hand-made in the USA Also included is a genuine black leather sheath as well as Buck's lifetime warranty.

KA-BAR Cutlass Machete Knife Review

KA-BAR Cutlass Machete Knife Fixed 11 inch Blade

KA-BAR's Black Cutlass Machete reaches back to the roots of both designs, coming up with a new approach that works well for modern campers and adventurers. The 16-1/2-inch rat tail tang knife -- with 11 inches of 1085 high carbon steel cutting edge -- chops brush, slashes rope, and in a pinch could repel a boarding party, just like the seaman's cutlass of yesteryear.

Actually, there really is a strong resemblance both in form and in function, since the fighting cutlass originally was a short heavy blade designed for chopping work. With a handguard added, it became a crude but effective fighting weapon popular with sailors and pirates. Later on in history, the practical working ability and hand protection made it the preferred tool for hand-harvesting sugar cane on Caribbean plantations.

In this lighter design, with a Kraton grip and no basket hilt, the Cutlass Machete serves well for today's camping and bushcraft needs. Break trails, clear a campsite, chop kindling, and when you're done, slip the 1.12-pound knife back into the leather and Cordura belt sheath to keep it handy. Hollow ground with a stout edge angle of 20 degrees and tempered to HRC 52-54, the knife holds up well to harsh treatment. If honed razor sharp, it could be a decent butcher knife for field dressing big game, but the intention behind this combination cutlass and machete is much less delicate work.

Specifications:

  • Weight - 1.12 lbs.
  • Blade Length - 11"
  • Overall Length - 16-1/2"
  • Shape - Cutlass
  • Stamp - Taiwan
  • Edge Angle - 20 degrees
  • Steel - 1085 Carbon
  • Grind - Hollow
  • Handle Material - Kraton G
  • Made in Taiwan

CRKT Hissatsu Folding Knife Review

Columbia River Hissatsu Folding 3.875" Blade w/OutBurst Assisted Opener

Columbia River Knife & Tool is a great company to consider if you're looking for compact or folding Hissatsu knives. You'll find good quality, solid craftsmanship, and nothing to complain about.

This particular Hissatsu knife is called the Hissatsu Folder, and was designed by none other than James Williams, president of Bugei Trading Company. His specialties in martial arts give this folding knife a traditional Japanese flavor, even though it's very modern-looking at the same time.

The CRKT Hissatsu is one of the best fighting knives made especially for combat I have ever seen and the folder does not disappoint ether! CRKT and James Williams really have themselves a winner here. This folder is one of the beefiest folders I have used. The bolt of the Hissatsu folder is very large and can take a remarkable amount of strain for a folding knife. The next thing that really blew me away was the locking mechanism which is not a thin piece of steel for a liner lock it’s a round, what looks like rolled steel rod and when this rod snaps into place your really feel that your blade is not going anywhere!

The design of the knife is very subdued and classy looking without any weird groves or notches. The only notches on the entire handle is for the clip and thumb stud. The scales on this knife are something I really like, not over done, but just the right texturing to allow for great grip and plain enough to keep a classy sleek design which looks like something a man in a suit would carry. The inside of the knife has steel liners behind the zytel scales for added strength and when it comes to strength, the Hissatsu folder is reinforced with two locking mechanisms, a liner lock and a sliding lock that secures the liner lock from disengaging which really gives you a sense of security and assurance that when you need to do heavy work with this knife it’s not going to snap back and bite you!

The blade is 3.875 inches long and is made from super-strong AUS 8 stainless steel. It's coated with a black titanium nitride finish to make it even more resilient to the elements.

The Hissatsu's handle is equally strong, since it's made from blackened Zytel. Plus it also carries a couple of handy features like the Outburst Assisted Opening system and the Liner Lock mechanism.

The knife also comes with a locking belt clip that attaches to either the right or left side of the handle, whatever your preference.

While it might not be as affordable as some, we think it's worth every penny. You get what you pay for and, in this case, you get the quality of CRKT in a package made with premium materials.

Cold Steel SRK Survival Rescue Knife Review

The Cold Steel SRK is another great knife from one of my favorite manufacturers. This knife is equally effective hung upside down vertical on a tactical vest, attached to your belt , or in the horizontal position for Small of Back (SOB) carry. This knife is also standard issue for all U.S. Navy Seal team members that are going through BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition/Seal) training.

Here's what Cold Steel has to say about this knife "Survival/Rescue operations demand a versatile knife able to withstand the most extreme abuse. The SRK (Survival Rescue Knife) was designed specifically with this in mind. The blade is finished with a rich Teflon coat which helps to protect the AUS 8A Stainless steel from the elements. It features a tremendously strong clip point that’s fine enough for delicate work, yet possesses enough belly for efficient cutting, slashing and skinning strokes as well. At 3/16 of an inch thick, the Survival Rescue Knife offers the sturdiest possible point and edge configuration, without sacrificing sharpness. The SRK’s handle sports a single quillion finger guard and a deeply checkered Kraton grip."

I have owned a SRK for about 5 years now, and I can tell you that this knife is a real work horse. I have personally used mine to clean game, but this knife also has all the characteristics necessary for a great sentry knife.

This knife weighs in at a svelte 8.2 ounces. With a total carry weight of 11 ounces including the sheath. The overall length is 10 3/4 inches. This knife has all the power that you will need for utility or self defensive tasks, and it won't weigh you down.

This knife is made in Japan out of AUS8 Stainless Steel, which means that the blade is medium-carbon, high chromium steel, which offers a good balance of toughness, edge sharpness and corrosion resistance. Please remember that no metal is completely corrosion resistant, however anything with a chromium content over 10% will show significant corrosion resistance. This blade is a very strong clip style point that measures 6 inches in length. Stainless Steel is notorious for not being able to hold a good edge, but in my opinion Cold Steel has overcome this limitation by perfecting the heat treatment that their knives undergo. I could shave with this knife directly out of the package, and now after 5 years, the knife is still razor sharp. The Blade is made of one piece of metal that extends the length of the knife which classifies this knife as an encapsulated tang. The blade is coated with Teflon which helps to protect the blade from the elements and also makes it slide easier through flesh.

The sheath is Cold Steel's Secure-Ex sheath, which provides a good retention. This knife will fit securely into the sheath, and I have not had any issues with retention. The sheath includes multiple holes to attach the knife to your gear, and it also includes a very large belt loop that will fit over duty or military belts. The belt loop includes both velcro and a snap for a secure grip with a quick release. This sheath also comes with a top retention strap that snaps closed ensuring that this knife will not fall out while performing any activity.

The handle is black, checkered, Kraton; which gives it a very secure grip. This handle should not slip around in your hand or twist. The handle includes a lanyard hole to secure the knife to your wrist. I added a 12 inch piece of parachute cord to mine. The handle is 4 3/4 inches in length.

For quality, reliability, strength, sharpness, and utility I give this knife a 9.5 out of 10 ranking. This is an excellent knife and if it is good enough for Navy Seals, then shouldn't it be good enough for you? If I were going to only have one fixed blade knife, this would be it.

Benchmade 940 Osborne Knife Review

Benchmade Model 940 Osborne 3.4" S30V Satin Plain Edge Blade

The Benchmade 940 knife is designed by none other than Australia's Warren Osborne, who works alongside Mel Pardue in Benchmade's creativity department. He's world-renowned for making custom "gentleman's" knives that are among the best you'll ever find.

The Benchmade 940 Osborne has a reverse tanto blade, which might be a different feel vs. traditional knives, but its unique design will appeal to many. It has two very prominent flat edges, clipping to a sharp point at the end. Oh and did we forget to mention it's made from S30V stainless steel? That's one of the best all-around steels you'll find.

Benchmade Model 940 Osborne 3.4" S30V Satin Plain Edge Blade

The blade folds down into a lightweight green aluminum handle, and is fitted with an AXIS locking mechanism with automatic release. It comes with a belt clip, but since it's so lightweight and measures less than 4.5 inches when closed, you'll probably like it best in your pocket.

It's reasonably priced for the materials used, but that doesn't mean it's cheap. Those who own it say they love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. And that's to be expected. When you have someone like Osborne engineering a precise knife, good things are bound to come from it.

SOG Fusion Revolver Seal Knife Review

SOG Fusion Revolver - SEAL 4.75" Revolving Blade and Saw

More than a folding knife and not quite a fixed blade, the SOG Speciality Knives & Tools FX21 Revolver SEAL shows some of the good features of both. Both knife and saw blades were ground from the same strong bar of 440A high carbon stainless steel.

The basics of the FX21 Revolver match those of the higher quality Trev-7 Revolver which SOG no longer manufactures. The blade quality of the lesser 440A steel is still serviceable but will require more maintenance than the tougher and harder AUS-8 of the Trev-7. Although it's made in Taiwan for SOG, the FX21 has earned a reputation as a reliable camp and survival tool.

The Revolver overcomes some of the structural weaknesses of the folding knife with its unusual revolving blade. One blade always remains in open position, locked in place by a pressure pin in the base of the handle. This locking system gives the knife nearly as much blade security as a fixed blade. Thumb pressure on the pin lever releases the blade, allowing the user to reverse it on the bearing, placing the second working edge in open and locked position. The knife functions well as both a 4.7-inch combo-edged Bowie clip point knife and a serrated double-tooth saw. Weight of the 10-inch knife is a surprisingly light 6 ounces due to the glass-reinforced nylon handle grip. The structure under that grip is reliable stainless steel.

SOG Fusion Revolver - SEAL 4.75" Revolving Blade and Saw
You'll need a good belt sheath for the Revolver since it handles and stores like a fixed blade. The light nylon sheath supplied with this SOG Revolver fares better if the saw blade is stored in the handle and the knife side of the blade is locked open, since teeth easily snag the fabric of the sheath.

Kershaw Blur Folding Knife Review

Kershaw Black Blur by Ken Onion Assisted 3-3/8" Black Combo Edge Blade

The tactical version of the well known Kershaw Blur by Ken Kershaw, this black anodized and non reflective combo edged tanto is also one of the most efficient alternatives to an automatic police knife.

Only 4.5" long closed, the aluminum based handle contains generous insert of Trac-Tec, for a non slip grip even in wet conditions. A 3 3/8" high carbon stainless steel blade opens one handed with ease. The patented SpeedSafe design uses the same spring steel bar that locks the blade in closed position to propel the blade forward once the thumb pushes it through the first part of the arc. Anyone who has need of an easily opened folder in situations where two handed use isn't an option can now enjoy that convenience, even if you're a civilian.

The wide handle and stout blade offer strength in use as well as a secure and comfortable grip, with a total carry weight of only 4.2 ounces. That's a reasonable load for anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet, in either the city or the bush. A lanyard hole is standard in case you want a wrist strap for extra security, but for most situations the stainless steel pocket clip is sufficient.

The Kershaw Blur by Kai USA comes with an excellent warranty but as with most tactical folders is not covered for use as a prybar. As a cutting tool it serves well.
