Cold Steel Recon Scout Fixed Blade Knife Review

Cold Steel Recon Scout 7-1/2" SK-5 High Carbon Black Fixed Blade

The Cold Steel Recon Scout performs great and shows that you don’t have to spend $300 to get this kind of performance from your survival knife. The blade is SK-5 (1080 equivalent). Cold Steel uses SK-5 instead of Carbon-V which is hard to get a hold of right now. The blade has a nice black epoxy powder coat finish and a nice long blade at 7.5 inches long. The overall length of this knife is 12.5 inches. One of the greatest things about the Recon Scout is that the blade is 5/16 inches thick, making it great for hammering and batoning work. This knife will hack through 4 inch tree limbs without a problem. The SK-5 High Carbon Steel holds an edge really well and sharpens nicely. The blade comes razor-sharp right out of the box.

The Recon Scout original model, the 39LRS, features a SK-5 high carbon blade that has proven to be tough and reliable over the years. Basically, the Recon is a small version of one of the most popular Bowie knives on the market: the Cold Steel Trail Master. The blade of the Recon Scout comes with a black Teflon finish to prevent rust. The handle is made of Kraton a polymer similar to rubber but tougher and with better resistance to hot temperatures. This material assures a good grip and reduces the shock from chopping.

The Kraton handle is awesome. I can’t express how great this handle is when it comes to actual use in the field. Awesome for shock absorption, awesome for cold weather use, awesome durability and provides a sturdy grip in all conditions. You could grease this handle up and still get a great grip. I love the Kraton handles. Fancy handles can’t hold a candle to this handle when the rubber meets the road.

The Secure-Ex sheath retains the Recon Scout knife well and is well constructed. It’s not the best sheath ever made but it’s well made and does a good job. The Cold Steel Recon Scout is close to the heavy side at 15 ounces but the balance of this knife makes that a non-factor. You will enjoy using this knife to get the job done, no matter what the job may be.
