KA-BAR Next Generation Fighting Knife Review

So, is this really the "next generation" of fighting knives? There's no doubt that it looks pretty intimidating. The next generation might be talking about how scary this one looks.

KA-BAR's Next Generation Fighting Knife, hereby referred to as the NGFK, is designed as a heavy-duty, combat-friendly knife. It's widely used by professionals in high-risk jobs, i.e. military, police, security, etc.

The Next Generation Fighting Knife features a blade made from 440A stainless steel, corrosion-resistant and cut into an impressive 20-degree edge angle leading to a very sharp point. The top swedge is unusually deep, and the blade also comes with partial serrations near the guard. And that "corrosion-resistant" bit means it's ideally suited for use in wet weather.

The handle is equally tough and corrosion-resistant too, since it's primarily made out of Kraton (except for the decorative powdered metal pommel). Kraton is an elastomer, and that's basically a big word for synthetic rubber. It has a comfortable "give" for grip, and doesn't peel or wear away given the test of time.

Ka-Bar's NGFK comes in a handy Kydex sheath too, so you can keep it hidden if you don't want to look so intimidating at first. But we actually did find one un-intimidating thing about this knife: the price. It's surprisingly affordable. I highly recommend the KA-BAR Next Generation Fighting Knife to anyone looking for a good and inexpensive fixed blade.

Benchmade Barrage Folding Knife Review

The Benchmade Barrage adds powerful spring-assisted opening to the already solid construction of Benchmade's Axis-lock knives. The Valox grip also has some excellent features, but doesn't beat Zytel in wet weather.

Benchmade recommends the Barrage for boaters, rescue workers, and anyone else who needs a dependable multi-purpose blade which opens one-handed in difficult conditions. The 4-3/4-inch handle deploys a 3.6-inch drop point blade with nearly automatic speed and convenience. Dual thumb studs allow easy operation with either hand -- unlock the Axis slide lock, push the blade partly open, and the strong spring-assist swings the blade to the open and locked position. Once open, it stays there unless the Axis lock is intentionally released.

Benchmade uses 154CM high carbon stainless steel for the Barrage's blade, an alloy originally designed for industrial tools. The alloy's strong points include high corrosion resistance, shock resistance, and superior edge retention. Barrage knives are available in three edge styles -- plain, serrated, or combo. The 4.2-ounce Barrage includes a reversible stainless steel pocket clip for customized carrying options.

The
Barrage's Valox grip depends more on shape than texture to provide a firm hold. The flared bolster prevents slipping forward, and the elongated oval handle includes indentations for your fingers. Ribbing on the grip is minimal, but the Valox resin has great mechanical strength and remains stable and chemical-resistant from 284 degrees F. to -40 degrees F. Anywhere between, you can count on it.

Cold Steel American Lawman Folding Knife Blade

Cold Steel American Lawman Folding Knife 3-1/2" Blade, G10 Handles

In honor of America's "thin blue line," Cold Steel has made the American Lawman, a serious knife with a 3.5-inch stainless steel drop point blade. Made from AUS-8A stainless steel and hollow ground, the Lawman's blade is super sharp and capable of handling all varieties of tough cutting tasks. A non-reflective Teflon coating helps further protect the blade from rust and stains. Twin thumb studs provide ambidextrous one-handed opening, allowing a quick and easy access to the blade.

The handle, with carefully implemented finger grooves, is comfortable and effective in forward, reverse, or choked-up grip for fine edge and point control. Heat-treated steel liners, overlaid with textured G-10 scales, provides a lightweight and strong handle with fantastic traction in the most extreme of conditions of wet or cold. Dual pocket clips make for easy carrying.

With Cold Steel's new Tri-Ad locking mechanism, the blade can take a tremendous impact, whether on the edge, point, or back of the blade. After rigorous and intensive testing from Cold Steel, the lock with triple backup system is guaranteed to work without fail, protecting your fingers and hand from an accidental closing.

With an overall length of 8 1/8-inches, and an overall weight of 5.4 ounces, this is a heavy duty knife. The Lawman was designed tough, and Cold Steel understood that, in the world of law enforcement, this knife could potentially mean the difference between life and death on any given day.

Fallkniven A1 Army Survival Knife Review

Fallkniven A1 Swedish Survival Knife 6.3" Satin VG10 Blade, Zytel Sheath

Gotta hand it to the Swedes - they sure do know how to make a great survival knife. Fallkniven is a supplier of knives to the king of Sweden, so they're probably doing something right.

Along with the H1 Hunting Knife and F1 Pilot Survival Knife, this A1 is another of their most popular models. The 6.5 inch blade is VG-10 steel, a high-carbon, molybdenum, chromium and vanadium mix that is often used in high-end Japanese kitchen knives. It's well known for its ability to hold a very sharp edge without being overly brittle. The blade is hardened to 59 on the Rockwell C scale, quite high for this type of blade. Out of the box it is very sharp and its simple geometry makes it straightforward to resharpen. It is a full-tang blade, extending beyond the end of the knife even while it is hidden inside the handle. And speaking of the handle, it's made of molded Kraton for an excellent non-slip grip without being overly rough. Note that it features a finger guard, which you may or may not be interested in.

Included is a Zytel Sheath.

Weightier brother of the S1, an uncompromising survival knife able to split wood, cleave brush and chop hard. 6mm thickness of VG10 laminate steel gives you the strength of blade, safe and reliable when you need it most. The design has been created to offer excellent balance and 'hand feel' and the convex ground of the blade gives tremendous bite into wood. Popular in military circles for is strong, safe design it is also offered with the 8H ceracoat black blade. A no-nonsense survival knife, proven in the field.

Kraton. Kraton is a high performance elastomer. It has most of the properties of natural rubber, but is much more durable and resistant to heat, weather and chemical damage. The Fallkniven A1 is available in two models, the A1 and the A1B-Black blade for reduced reflections.

KA-BAR Becker BK7 Combat Utility Knife Review

The Ka-Bar Becker BK7 all-purpose utility knife was designed specifically for soldiers and adventurers requiring a sturdy combat knife that can stand up to hard use. The BK7 is considered lightweight for a knife with a 7 inch blade, coming in at about .85 lbs. For weight, balance, swing, grind and overall utility value it trumps survival knives that cost twice as much. Most descriptions don’t describe how sturdy this knife is or even how thick the blade is. But be warned, this knife is almost 13 inches in overall length and might become cumbersome for smaller jobs. The 7" clip point blade is very thick and substantial, measuring 3/16" thick at the hilt. At 12-3/4" in overall length, this knife is isn't one you can casually carry around the street. It's fantastic in the woods for camping, hunting and survival. It is extremely well balanced and feels perfectly comfortable in your hand. The knife weighs 0.85 pounds.

The blade is made of 1095 Cro-van steel with an un-named black coating to help resist rust and corrosion. It is a full tang knife, with the metal extending beyond the handle for a significant flat pummeling surface. They did an excellent job of making a perfectly formed Grivory handle, bolted through the tang with 3 nuts and bolts. It feels like you can handle this knife with confidence. It comes with a very nice cordura nylon sheath that is quite durable. When I bought mine, they also provided a really cool little knife as a freebie. It's a sweet little 2-1/4" blade that is 5" overall (it says BK13 on it). It's not fancy, but it is a nice addition. That big ole 7" blade isn't very good for fine detail work, so this small freebie is certainly appreciated. It has a 2" nylon lanyard attached. The sheath has a separate sheath compartment for this secondary knife.
The KA-BAR Becker BK7 isn't cheap, but it really isn't that terribly expensive. It's the first "expensive" knife that I bought and I am still thrilled that I bought it. If I lost this knife, I'd order a replacement tomorrow. It's that good

KA-BAR Becker Fixed Combat Utility Knife 7" Carbon Steel Blade

Long favored by serious outdoorsmen and military personnel, the Becker BK7 features a tough 7" high-carbon 1095 Cro-Van steel blade that can reliably handle difficult jobs. In addition, the knife features contoured Grivory handle scales, a large lanyard hole, extended tang construction and an ambidextrous nylon sheath with a Kydex insert. The sheath has a gusseted accessory pocket for survival essentials or a multi-tool. The blade on the BK7 is epoxy coated to reduce reflections and resist corrosion, has a clip point blade design and flat ground edge for dependable point and Linkedge performance and is strong enough for light prying. The Ka-Bar Becker BK7 comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Made in the USA.

Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife Review

Gerber Big Rock Camp Knife 4.5" Plain Edge Blade with Sheath

Very utilitarian in appearance but very functional in design, this knife created by William Hersey is an inexpensive alternative to traditional sheath knives made from more natural materials. The 4.5" blade is big enough for a full sized skinner and stout enough for camp work. The glass filled, rubberized handle is textured and shaped for safe and secure gripping. Available with a choice of edge styles, combo serrated or simply plain, the Big Rock will do the work without punching a hole in your budget.

If you are not into the mystique of knives you may be satisfied with the Big Rock. It's not a knife you'd regret dinging up by making mistakes, or using it in ways that are necessary but not covered by the warranty. If you are careless with your camping gear and your knives spend a lot of time in a damp box on your garage floor, or the rusty recesses of a tackle box, this is an excellent choice.

People tend to pull out their knives around the campfire at night and whittle, and judge one another by them. If you spend hours staring into campfire coals instead of sleeping, and to you the glint of a knife blade in the firelight means something hard to explain, you may find that this functional but not beautiful knife just won't hold enough memories.

Although the Big Rock is an outstanding hunting knife, Bill Harsey designed this fixed blade to be an excellent all-purpose camping knife as well. The full tang drop point blade comes in both fine edge or serrated, and the ergonomically shaped glass-filled nylon handle uses a Softgrip over mold with textured grip points for maximum comfort and control. A finger guard protects, and the lanyard hole is compatible with 550 cord. Nylon sheath with protective insert included.

SOG SEAL Team Elite Knife Review

The SOG Seal Team Elite Survival Knife is one of the best in the SOG Seal line of knives. This survival knife came out on top in the US Government’s knife evaluation program. Testing evaluated tip breaking strength, blade sharpness and edge retention, as well as blade toughness. This knife takes the SOG Seal series to another level.

SOG SEAL Team Elite 7" Black TiNi Finish Combo Edge Blade

The blade is matte black with a TiNi coating and has a new blade shape with a longer cutting edge. This blade is pretty long at 7 inches, so you won’t need to worry if it will complete those big jobs or not. The blade is made of AUS8 Steel and is partially serrated to make those cutting jobs easier. The serrations on this knife are sharp so cutting is a breeze. The overall length of the SOG Seal Team Elite is 12.3 inches, not something you will likely carry when grocery shopping, but could possibly be a lifesaver in a survival situation. How do you get better than a full tang? With an extended tang. The blade has a spine rasp for notching and an extended tang for hammering and glass breaking.

The handle is the famous SOG Zytel handle which is both durable and strong. I love the diamond design grip. It makes this knife easy to handle even in wet conditions. I think this is one of the best survival knife handles out there, but that is my personal preference. The finger-grooves on this handle make it feel natural to hold even during hard use. This knife weighs in at 10.3 ounces and is well-balanced. So although this knife is on the large side, it is very easy to handle and is balanced to feel natural.

The sheath is their popular Kydex sheath. The sheath holds this knife pretty well but I have heard complaints about how tight the fit is when the top strap is not secured, even though I haven’t experienced any problems. This sheath gives you a lot of options for securing. The sheath comes with a pouch to store a multi-tool or fire-steel. Overall this is absolutely one of the best Survival Knives out there.

CRKT M21-14SFG Folding Knife Review

This week's Knife Review Video of the Week is:
CRKT M21-14SFG Tactical Folding Knife Review.

The Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) M21-14SFG folding tactical knife is probably one of the best folding pocket knives I have ever owned. It is designed and developed for military and law enforcement professionals. It has an impressive design, and outstanding durability. The titanium nitride finish keeps this knife from rusting, despite the fact that I have run half marathons with it, taken it into the ocean several times, played with it in the swimming pool, used it in the rain, cold, heat, etc. It still sharpens up like a champ, and there are no rusting spots on it anywhere.

Many people prefer G10 material because of its aggressive texture, light weight, and insulating properties in very hot and cold conditions. Simply stating, it never feels hot or cold.

Columbia River M21 Carson Special Forces Black G10 Handle 3.875" Combo Edge

The CRKT M21-14SFG design incorporates two Carson Flippers into the design and functionality. The Carson Flippers are not only used to quickly deploy the knife into the open position, they also act as a true hilt. This offers maximum protection during aggressive use – which is extremely rare in folding knives.

The out-of-pocket deployment is lightning fast, and very easy to master. Making this a quickly accessible knife in time of urgent need. The speed at which this knife can be deployed is faster than any switch-blade or assisted-opening style design, with no opening operational moving parts that tend to break over time.

Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT M21-14SFG Description)

Columbia River M21 Carson Special Forces Black G10 Handle 3.875" Combo Edge
The Special Forces G10 models share a unique design offering a combination of Carson Series features requested by military procurement specialists. The deep-bellied spear point blades were specified because they offer maximum strength. The open build allows two Carson Flippers to be incorporated, resulting in a true hilt— very rare in folding knives.

The M21™-14SFG G10 "Big Dog" model features a stainless steel InterFrame build with black G10 scales. Many operators prefer G10 because of its aggressive texture, light weight, and insulating properties in very hot and cold conditions. Now you have a choice. Blade steel is 8Cr14MoV stainless with our Combination patented (2) Veff™ Serrations.

Blade, frame and hardware are non-reflective tactical black. The blade receives a black titanium nitride coating for maximum corrosion resistance. Kit's trademark dual checkered thumb studs are standard. One-hand opening and closing is quick and smooth.

It also features our exclusive patented (1) AutoLAWKS™ automatic safety, which turns the folder into a virtual fixed blade automatically.

All knives in this series are equipped with clip options that allow four-position carry on belts or webbing. Caution: These knives are not designed for tip-up in-pocket carry. They are special knives, designed by the military for special forces use.

1. U.S. Patent Nos. 5,596,808 and 7,437,822 2. U.S. Patent No. D559,939
