Knife Review Video of the Week - Spyderco Delica 4 Knife

This week's Knife Review Video of the Week is: Spyderco Delica 4 Knife Review

Spyderco Delica 4 Folding Knife 2-9/16" VG10 Satin Plain Blade, Stainless Steel Handles

The Delica lineup is closing in on an impressive 20-year history as one of the frontrunners in lightweight, one-handed pocketknives. It's one of Spyderco's best-selling knives, along with the Endura product line.Justify Full

The Delica's blade is made from VG-10 steel, a quality cutlery grade stainless steel produced in Japan. VG-10 is a unique formulation of steel with a high carbon content that measures between 57-59 on the Rockwell scale!

Overall, the knife measures 7-1/8 inches. The blade is just short of 3 inches, so the knife should fit nicely into your pocket. It's extremely lightweight too, as you might have guessed considering it's a Spyderco knife. The handle is made from Stainless Steel and has stainless steel liners bracing the inside of the handle as well.

The Delica blade you see pictured here possesses a plain-edge. Other models exist with a fully-serrated edge and combo-edge blades, and you're not losing any quality by choosing to go with another model. Any of them will work well for you.

Kershaw Scallion Knife Review

Kershaw Knives Ken Onion Scallion Assisted 2-1/4" Plain Blade, Black Zytel Handle

The Scallion, a modern design created by Ken Onion and now produced and marketed by Kershaw, is a gentleman's pocket knife built to modern standards. That approach provides several advantages over the classic gentleman's knife, which evolved to be too small to be generally useful.

Modern knife makers like Ken Onion rebelled against the old trend, producing knifes that had handles and blades of practical size, wider than the usual pocket knives but still within legal length limits. Modern materials and clever engineering made them even better.

The Scallion's 2 1/4" stainless steel blade opens with a flick of the thumb and locks securely in place once fully open. The sculpted blade design also serves as a practical finger guard, giving the user a finger notch for greater safety and leverage. The Green model's handle is anodized aluminum, slick and pretty; other models offer textured polyimide for a better and warmer grip.

A secure pocket clip completes the list of modern perks that people are coming to think of as expected features on a good pocket knife. Hook the Scallion to the lip of your pocket and you'll hardly know it's there, until you need it.

Knife Review Video of the Week - Spyderco Endura 4 Wave and Spyderco Endura 4 Knife

This week's we have two Knife Review Videos of the Week, they are: Spyderco Endura 4 Wave and Spyderco Endura 4 Knife Review

Spyderco-Endura 4 Wave

The Spyderco Endura 4 Wave has a repositionable clip. It can be moved tip up or tip down, left or right - whatever your pleasure. The entire knife can be disassembled with an Allen wrench for ease of cleaning, oiling, repairing, or just if you feel the need to lose tiny Allen screws in your carpet.
The Spyderco Endura 4 Wave's blade measures just under 4" hilt to tip. Spydero makes a little twin of this knife called the Spyderco Delica 4 Wave with a blade just under 3". The Spyderco Endura 4 Wave features VG-10 steel. VG-10 is a one of a kind formulation of steel with a high carbon content, containing Chromium, Vanadium, Molybdenum and Cobalt. The steel was specially designed for high-quality professional chef cutlery. VG-10 is often called "super steel," because it is designed to maintain durability and sharpness without becoming susceptible to shattering, a major fault usually associated with extremely hard steel. This makes the VG-10 steel the best of both worlds, and is ideal when extreme sharpness is desired, since most other steel will not take or keep an edge like VG-10. When VG-10 steel is used in a knife, it is usually encased in layers of steel providing greater corrosion-resistance, leaving only the "super steel" exposed at the edge for fine cutting. The tip of the knife is re-enforced to avoid chipping.

The back of the blade features Spyderco's thumb hole. This enables you to flick the blade open with one hand and very efficiently at that. I personally prefer it to the post type thumb opener on previous knives I’ve owned. It makes for a positive grip for your thumb and the design eliminates any awkwardness when the blade rotates open.

My favorite feature of this knife is the "wave" in front of the thumb hole. This is a feature designed by Emerson knives licensed to Spyderco for this knife. This was the selling feature for me. The wave, or hook, causes the knife to open as it comes out of your pocket. All you have to do is pull the knife out of your pocket while applying light pressure either toward the back of your pocket or twist the hook toward the outside of the pocket. As you are pulling it out, the blade will open OUTSIDE of your pocket. It is completely safe and intuitive. It makes it look like you are pulling an open knife from your pocket. It is very, very fast. It allows you to have an open blade in your hand with the same speed as if you pulled a hunting knife from a sheath. From a work standpoint it is fantastic. From a personal defense standpoint it is genius!! See the wave feature in action below:

The Spyderco Endura 4 Wave measures 5” closed and weighs 3.6 ounces. It is available with a variety of blade styles, including a plain edge, SypderEdge (serrated), and combo edge.

Spyderco Endura 4
Combo Edge

Spyderco Endura 4 Black Blade
Spyderco Endura 4th Generation 3-3/4" Black Combo Edge, Black Handle

Of all of the Spyderco Folding Knife combinations, the
Spyderco Endura Combo edge folding knife is a favorite for everyday all the time carrying. The standard Spyderco pocket clip is strong and holds well in pocket or on your belt. The clip can be moved from one side to the other and placed at either end, and of course you can even leave it off, if you prefer. The FRN Textured Handle comes in the color "Foliage Green" and feels good whether you are holding the knife with the blade up or down. The 3.6 ounces allows you to know that the knife is their in it's position when it is in your pocket but light enough so you sometimes check it anyway. Closed, the Endura is 5" long. Open, it measures 8-3/4" meaning the blade is 3-3/4" by 1/8" thick. The Blade is made from VG-10 steel and comes razor sharp from the factory. The blade is ground saber flat with a enlarged 1/2" opening hole diameter for a more comfortable opening. This makes the Spyderco Endura folding knife ambidextrous. The spine of the blade has Jimping added for better handling. The combination blade serrations help when cutting rope or leather or other heavy products. For the price, you get very good workmanship and steel and overall, a great knife.

This week's Knife Review Video of the Week is: Cold Steel Safe Keeper II Push Dagger Blade Review and Demo

Cold Steel Safe Keeper II
Cold Steel Safe Keeper II Push Dagger

Cold Steel Safe Keeper II
Here are perhaps the finest production push knives in almost 150 years. They have the cutting and piercing potential of a larger knife, but are small enough so that they can be easily attached to tactical web gear, tucked in a waistband or boot top, or even strapped to a wrist or ankle.

Cold Steel Safe Keeper II

Cold Steel Safe Keeper II

Designed for the twenty first century, the Safe Keeper II is the ultimate push knife. Just the look of this knife with its wicked blade jutting out from the fist is enough to deter almost all aggressors. And, if action is necessary, the Safe Keeper's shock absorbing Kraton handle imparts devastating punching blows, yet is so secure in one's hand that it's practically impossible for even a novice to be disarmed.

The Safe Keeper III offers outstanding versatility, especially as a boot knife. Its light weight and overall length of five inches make it the perfect combination of small size and big performance. The single edged design of the Safe Keeper III means you can safely "choke up" on the blade for extra fine work, while the false edge provides superior point strength. With only one sharp edge, the Safe Keeper III can double as a rescue knife.

CRKT M-16 Series Knives

CRKT M-16 Series Knives

CRKT M16-10kz
CRKT M16-10kz

CRKT Kit Carson M16 Series Knives

Kit Carson of Vine Grove, Kentucky, is a retired professional soldier, rising to the level of Sergeant Major. He has made knives for 28 years and has been a full time knifemaker since 1993. He is a voting member of the Knifemakers' Guild. Kit has been an avid hunter and fisherman for over 40 years, growing up enjoying the woods and trout streams in the mountains of north Georgia. About his philosophy of knife design, he says: "I strive to follow form and function in the knives I design and build. My reputation has been built around solid working knives, both fixed blade and folders. All the time spent outdoors as a young man and the time spent around the world with the Army has strongly influence the knives I create." Nothing reflects this approach more than the Carson Design of CRKT's M16 series, which is built for function, not to follow fads. This highly successful knife series, available with handles of aluminum, Zytel, or carbon fiber, also features the "Carson Flipper" on many models.

Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) has made quite a name for itself in the "tactical folder" market. The company imports an increasingly diverse selection of affordable, high-quality knives that set the standard for "budget daily carry" among those who carry self-defense blades. One of the more popular lines in the CRKT catalog is the M16 series. Available in multiple sizes and blade styles, a representative cross-section of the line includes the M16-03Z, the M16 Special Forces, and the M16 EDC Compact models.

The entire CRKT M16 line is worth a look. Given the wide array of blade styles and sizes from which to choose, I'm confident you'll be able to find a model that suits you.

Knife Review Video of the Week - Benchmade 950 Rift Knife

This week's Knife Review Video of the Week is: Benchmade 950 Rift Knife Review

The Benchmade 950 Rift has a 3.67 inch 154CM blade featuring Warren Osborne's trademark reverse tanto point. The blade is flat ground, with the grind starting somewhat between FFG and saber ground. The reverse tanto provides a strong tip that the tanto provides, while retaining a functional belly. The belly combined with the almost fully flat ground makes it a hell of a slicer. The tanto tip provides strength to the tip, and unlike conventional belief, the tanto tip does not make it a good all-around piercer, but instead helps introduce most of the width of the knife very quickly. This makes the best of use of the short time when the power of the stabbing motion is as its peak.

The Rift from Benchmade is a strikingly stylish knife, with a patterned G10 handle and reverse tanto blade, the Rift folding knife is a work of art as well as a workhorse.

Made in the USA

Reverse tanto for toughness, large-bellied blade for utility cutting, and textured G10 handle scales help you get a firm grip on any situation.

AXIS locking mechanism

Reverse tanto blade with ambidextrous dual thumb-stud opener

154CM stainless steel blade (58-61HRC)

G10 handle scales with 420J stainless steel liners and a reversible tip-up carry-clip

Gerber Guardian Backup Knife Review

The Gerber Guardian Back-Up knife is the ideal image of stealth and camouflage in a fixed blade. The light feel of the Nylon Gerber handle is the definition of comfort, weighing only 3 ounces and having Soft grip inserts. It doesn't matter how much pressure you use on the Gerber knife, the Guardian won't break or bend and is great to use in any weather. The black Gerber blade is rust resistant and has a double-edge to increase your cutting. The molded plastic sheath is the perfect fit for your Gerber blade, you can clip it anywhere and keep the knife from drawing attention to yourself.

Gerber Guardian Backup Tanto
Based on its existing Guardian Back-Up design, Gerber developed the Gerber Back-Up with a Tanto style blade to replace (for those who wanted it) the double-edged spear point blade of the original Guardian Back-Up. Let's be honest: anyone who has carried and used knives for long enough has preferences in blade design, handle shape, etc. Plenty of people prefer the well-documented historical performance of the Tanto style blade. For penetration strength it's hard to beat and its sharp edge cuts as well as any other sharp edge. In this case, the 3/4" cutting edge, including the 1" of serrated edge, is supported by a full 1/8" thickness in the blade steel to within 5/8" of the tip.

The blade is made of High Carbon Stainless steel, and has been blackened to make it non-reflective. Indeed the only shiny part of the knife is the sharpened edges on either side of the blade. It is a “3/4 tang blade”, meaning that the blade continues three-quarters of the way to the end of the handle. With the use of a magnet I was able to verify that this is the case. On one side of the blade is the Gerber logo, and the words Portland OR beneath it. All are in gold lettering.

The black handle is constructed of “glass filled nylon” covered with “Santoprene”. It feels to be almost as soft as rubber, but more durable. It does not get slippery, even with wet hands. It has held up very well also.

The sheath is constructed from black molded plastic. It has the Gerber logo molded into the front of it, and a metal clip on the back. The clip can be used as a traditional belt loop, a boot sheath, or an inverted hanging sheath. On either side of the sheath are two sliding tabs. The tabs lock onto grooves on the side of the sheath. By sliding the tabs up towards the open end of the sheath, it tightens the hold of the sheath on the knife blade. This holds it more securely and necessitates more force to pull the knife out of the sheath. By sliding the tabs down towards the closed end of the sheath, it loosens the hold on the blade, allowing it to come out easier.

At the very end of the sheath is a small lanyard hole measuring 3/16" (4 mm) across.

Knife Review Video of the Week - Spyderco Native Knife

This week's Knife Review Video of the Week is: Spyderco Native Knife Review

Spyderco Native

Spyderco Native
Spyderco Native Folding Knife 3-1/16" S30V Satin Plain Blade, Black FRN Handles

This ultra modern pocket knife is ergonomically designed for effective use. That could just be gibberish, but Spyderco actually did something differently and even a little better with this one. There's a finger notch farther up the knife than usual, half handle and half blade. Does that make for easier use and better leverage? Yes.

If you buy the version with the combination edge -- serrated at the base and plain at the tip -- that advantage will be canceled out. Plain edge knives, even without the notch, are practical for that same reason: maximum leverage is right at the base of the blade. Every time I see a combo edge knife I think about how awkward it will be if I want to do something besides cut rope; plain edge knives are better for almost everything else.

The build of this knife is light duty. It's not a prybar or a hammer. If you abuse it in those ways you'll be sorry. If you need a pocket knife that won't get lost under the change in your pocket, the clip on the Spyderco Native's handle will solve that problem perfectly. If you want a pocket knife with a handle stout enough to use without slipping in your hand, the wide and secure composite handle slabs give you that. The 3 1/8" high carbon stainless steel blade unlocks and folds to a closed length of 3 15/16", small enough to clip to your belt or pocket without looking like a survivalist even if you are one.

The Spyderco Native is available in many different styles and/or colors. To buy or to get more information, click the link directly below.
